TMS therapy, also known as transcranial magnetic stimulation, is a non-invasive procedure that helps combat depression in individuals who have not seen results from antidepressant medication. TMS works by stimulating the brain cells to improve depression symptoms.

Before you begin treatments, you may need a physical exam or psychiatric evaluation. During the review, your doctor may send you for further testing. During the psychiatric evaluation, you will discuss your depression. The primary purpose of the assessment is to determine whether or not TMS is the right fit for you.

Several conditions can affect TMS treatment. Please let your doctor know if you:

  • Are pregnant or may become pregnant
  • Have a history of seizures
  • Suffer from severe or frequent headaches
  • Are taking any medications
  • Have previously received any TMS treatments
  • Have any metal or implanted medical devices including, but not limited to, stents, bullet fragments, cochlear implants, and electrodes for monitoring brain activity.
  • Have any other medical conditions
  • Suffer from brain damage due to an injury or illness
  • Have other mental health disorders

Your doctor will also want to know about your family medical history.

Since TMS is a non-invasive procedure, you can come to the office on your own. You do not have to have someone pick you up after your appointment. You should also contact your health insurance before your date to ensure they will cover treatments.
